Mercury retrograde: what it means and how to survive it

Three or four times a year, Mercury appears to reverse course in the sky, and half the internet blames it for everything from lost emails to returned exes. Here is what is actually happening, what astrologers read into it, and how to use the period instead of fearing it.

The astronomy

What Mercury retrograde actually is

Mercury never moves backwards. It orbits the sun faster than Earth does, and three to four times a year it overtakes us on the inside lane. During the overtake, seen from Earth, Mercury appears to slow, stop and slide backwards against the stars for about three weeks before resuming forward motion. It is a line-of-sight illusion, the same effect as a slower train seeming to roll backwards when yours accelerates past it.

In 2026 the retrograde windows fall roughly in late February to mid March, late June to late July, and late October into mid November. Astrologers also work with a shadow period of about two weeks on either side, when the effects are said to build and fade.

The astrology

What astrologers read into it

In astrology Mercury governs communication, information, contracts, travel and technology. When it appears to move backwards, that whole department is read as turning inward: messages garble, plans wobble, devices act up, old matters and old people resurface. Whether you treat that as planetary influence or as a seasonal reminder to slow down, the advice attached to it is concrete.

The classic list: double-check messages before sending, read contracts twice and avoid signing what can wait, back up your files, build slack into travel plans, and expect the past to knock: the ex who texts mid-retrograde is an astrological cliché for a reason. The re- prefix is the theme: review, revise, repair, reconnect, reflect. Astrologers consistently frame retrograde as a poor moment to launch and an excellent moment to finish.

How strongly a retrograde lands is read through your own chart: which of your houses Mercury is transiting and how it aspects your placements. An astrology reading can map the current retrograde onto your birth chart, and your sun sign's general weather is on the zodiac signs pages.

Perspective

Do not fear the retrograde

A word of calm: Mercury retrograde happens three to four times every year and always has. Careers, relationships and technology survive it every time. Studies find no spike in accidents or failures during retrograde periods; what the season reliably produces is attention, and attention to your communication and plans is useful in any month. Use the period as astrologers actually recommend: slow down, tie off loose ends, say the unsaid thing carefully, and let launches wait a few weeks if they can.

Frequently asked questions

When is Mercury retrograde in 2026?

Roughly late February to mid March, late June to late July, and late October into mid November, with a shadow period of about two weeks on either side. An astrologer can map the exact dates onto your chart.

Does Mercury really move backwards?

No. It is an optical illusion that occurs when faster-orbiting Mercury overtakes Earth, making the planet appear to reverse against the stars for about three weeks.

What should I avoid during Mercury retrograde?

Astrologers advise against launching major projects, signing avoidable contracts and buying critical electronics, and in favor of reviewing, repairing, backing up and finishing.

Why does my ex always text during retrograde?

Retrograde is read as the season of the past resurfacing. Whether that is planetary or coincidence, what matters is your answer, and that one is yours to choose.
